Welcome to our very first official spring benefit classroom projects website!!!

As we hope you know, the South Loop School 7th Annual Spring Benefit - "The City at Our Door" - is set for Friday, May 14th. One of the most anticipated events of the evening is the Silent Auction, which includes the showcasing of work by our talented students. Each classroom has been working hard to create one-of-a-kind pieces of art to donate to our school. We are very proud of all of our students' efforts and the dedicated volunteers who have helped to make these projects possible. We are especially grateful to all of our teachers who have allowed us to develop these projects and implement them within their classrooms -- their support to our children and to our school is much appreciated!

We are so excited and had such a good time creating these wonderful art pieces that we want to share them! Please click on the section above to find a preview of the artwork that will be for sale and photos of our young artists and the fun! We will be adding to our gallery as projects are conducted, so please check back often!

These amazing CDs are a compilation of poetry/music/sound art created by the students, Mr. Fanning, and artist Alberto Aguilar. Based on work developed during a creative writing workshop, the students' poems were recorded and original music was added to create this extraordinary work of art. Each CD cover is an original drawing by Alberto Aguilar.

Please, make faces at me! These whimsical wall sculptures were created by students working collaboratively in small groups to determine overall designs and then working independently to impart their individual talents on each tile. The final collection is a stunning example of teamwork!

Definitely not a bored game! Working with the students and introducing them to conceptual artist Tom Friedman (known for taking non-art materials and transforming the into extraordinary works of art), students were given the task to develop rules for a game that were then played out on the surface of reclaimed photographs using four colors, four players, and one finger per player.

Be a real estate magnate and own your own block! Inspired by discussions of Chicago and urban building typologies, students painted individual pieces of wood blocks (the plural!) to collectively create this beautiful mantle piece of a city block (the singular!).

Say "SMILE" to this! Students were introduced to a photographic process called HDR (high definition resolution) that allows more detail in the shadows and highlights of images. The image was then tone-mapped, reducing overall contrast and exaggerating color saturation for the artistic effect.
